Dr. Sung Yoon

About

Dr. Sung Yoon loves being an orthodontist because it gives him the opportunity to transform smiles while building meaningful relationships with his patients and their families. His appreciation for orthodontics began with his own treatment as a child. After his orthodontist closed the gap between his front teeth, he experienced firsthand how much a new smile could change the way someone feels about themselves. Today, he loves giving his patients that same sense of confidence.

Dr. Yoon believes great orthodontic care starts with getting to know the person behind the smile. He approaches treatment the way he would if the patient were a member of his own family — with honesty, thoughtful recommendations, and a genuine interest in their lives. He enjoys treating patients of all ages and finds both straightforward and complex orthodontic cases rewarding.

Joining James River Orthodontics felt like a natural fit. Dr. Yoon was drawn to the welcoming, experienced team and the patient-centered culture Dr. Scarborough and Dr. Loflin have built. He looks forward to helping JRO continue to grow while remaining a practice Richmond-area families know and trust.

Outside of the practice
Originally from New Jersey, Dr. Yoon now enjoys exploring Richmond with his wife, Jocelyn, whom he met in college. The two have been together throughout his journey through dental school and orthodontic residency and are excited to begin their next chapter in Virginia with their much-loved pug, Buzz.

Dr. Yoon is also a big baseball fan with a goal of visiting every Major League Baseball stadium. When he isn’t at a ballpark or exploring local parks with Jocelyn and Buzz, there’s a good chance you’ll find him working on his aquarium. A lifelong aquatic-life enthusiast, he jokes that if orthodontics hadn’t worked out, he might be running a saltwater aquarium store instead.

And interestingly, orthodontics really is Dr. Yoon’s second career. Before dental school, he worked for a healthcare technology startup developing electronic health record solutions for public school health clinics across the country. One of the company’s early customers was Richmond City Public Schools — giving Dr. Yoon a connection to his new hometown well before he knew he would eventually practice here.

Education

Dr. Yoon earned his Bachelor of Science in Psychology, with a minor in Biology, from Macaulay Honors College at the City College of New York, graduating summa cum laude. He went on to earn his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine, where he graduated magna cum laude and was inducted into Omicron Kappa Upsilon, the national dental honor society.

He completed his orthodontic residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston School of Dentistry, earning his Master of Science in Orthodontics. Dr. Yoon has also completed advanced training through the Aligner Intensive Fellowship.
